After the year 4000 many distant colonies are declaring independence from their rightful governmental owners. Because most of these governments are on the UW short for United World council, the UW declared war with these troublesome colonies. Little resources were allocated in to this fight with these troublesome colonies as more resources were spent trying to build up the UW's main fleet and army. The UW started building up their army because they knew that it is just a matter of time before a large scale war erupts.
More colonies declared independence after seeing more and more drop in stability of the UW. Chaos reigned in the large empire of the Terrans. This quickly escalated into total war with the UW waging war with various small colonies.
These rebelling colonies started to start colonizing on their own. This is caused by the UW invading their planet or as expansion. After a few hundred years the UW was unable to really get rid of the problem problematic colonies. This is because for each colony the UW was able to invade, the rebels would have colonized another 2 planets.
This went on for a few thousand years with the UW trying to stop the rebellion. However luck turn against the UW as more and more of the newly colonized colonies banded together against the UW. It is clear that the UW was fighting a losing battle.
It was during the end of the Unification War when the Free Worlds fleet (FW or Free Worlds is the name of what the rebel now call themselves) launched an attack on the solar system trying to get to Earth, the Terran homeworld and the center of UW power.
The battle war long and hard as both sides knows the importance of Earth. However due to the now large resources at the rebel's hands they soon erode the UW's defenses. One by one the planets within the solar system was taken over by the FW, soon it was Earth's turn. Earth was known to be the most secure fortress of all Terran planets, to invade it would be very hard. The FW used long ranged planetary bombardment. After sometime, most of the defenses on Earth were destroyed. The remaining UW members were forced to try out a new weapon which was still far from completion.
Somehow this weapon was effective against the FW's fleet. Only after 1 hour almost 20% of the FW was shot down. The UW's rash decision of using the untested weapon non-stop for such a long duration caused a melt-down in its' power generator. The effect of this melt-down is catastrophic.
Until this day researchers and historians aren't fully sure what actually happen. It just seemed that the entire solar system, along with Earth and the FW's entire fleet disappeared.
With out Earth the UW's power quickly eroded and marks the end of the Unification War period.
