What is it ?
 
Trade partners is an empire which is on friendly trade terms with your empire. Bear in mind this only effects the trade aspect. They will still are able to attack you and be attacked by your empire. Also remember that trade is a great source of income.
 
What does trade partners do ?
 
Your empire gains significant trade income because these empires will automatically have an open trade line to your empire. Since you gain from your trade partners, it is only logical to assist them by helping them in the game in order for their empire to grow. This can be in the form of advice, sharing of experience of in game strategies. You may want to check your target empire's details first to see if your target is your trade partner before prior to launching an attack.
 
What I get ?
 
Basically your trade partner will trade goods with your empire and you stand to gain a percentage on all income generated by your trade partner's commercial. You also gain from the person whom your trade partner's trading with. The downside of this is, the transaction is one way which means that you gain from your trade partner but your trade partner does not gain from you. All trade related income will then be stored in your empire's trade reserve.

What is trade reserve ?
 
All trade related income will not be deposited in to your empire automatically. You will have to manually withdraw from your trade reserve from time to time in order to use your trade income. You are allowed to withdraw 50% of your trade reserve at a single time. How fast your trade reserve goes up is another way to measure how well your trading partners is performing.
 
How do I get more trade partners ?
 
You have to invite users to join as your trade partner
