# Galactic Conquest Classic — Design Direction (Theory-First)

**Purpose:** Single **design-language** anchor for brainstorming, lore, pacing, monetization posture, and feature debates—**without** implementation specifics. Use this when comparing **ideas**: “does this move us toward or away from the directions below?”

**Companion:** The authoritative **technical + codebase–linked** spec remains **`docs/GDD.md`**. Update this theory doc when **product philosophy** shifts; reconcile implementation there when you commit to builds.

---

## 1. What this game is

**Galactic Conquest Classic** is a **browser-based**, **persistent**, **multiplayer** empire-building strategy game: colonies, economy, technology, fleets, alliances, diplomacy, warfare, and long-form reputation in a **shared galaxy** that keeps going—not a solitary story mode and not a seasonal ladder.

Success is framed by **interaction with real players**, not by finishing a scripted campaign.

---

## 2. North-star & pillars

### North-star

**A persistent shared multiplayer world** — progression and consequence come from **other humans** in the same long-running galaxy. World history does not reset each “season”; the metaphor is continuity, grudges, mentorship, betrayal, growth.

### Supporting pillars

1. **Strategic identity through races** — Races diverge **economically and militarily**, not as palette swaps.
2. **Player-driven alliances and politics** — Player alliances (federations) are the backbone of diplomacy, mentorship, coordinated war, spy drama; design **leans toward** socially engaged players without **blocking** lone wolves structurally.
3. **Universal action budget** — A single **turn** metaphor limits how much an empire advances per heartbeat of the shard; scarcity forces choices between growth, tech, fleets, probing, warfare, diplomacy.
4. **Legibility without rigidity** — Manual and UI help expose systems; layouts and visual patterns remain **experiment space** until a dedicated design wave locks them (**see §17**).

### Explicit non-goals

- Seasonal resets, server wipes, or “fresh start worlds” as the **default** promise.
- **Pay-to-win** military outcomes (“pay → win fights”).
- Positioning GCC as primarily a **single-player** or **solo story** title.

---

## 3. Shards & pacing (conceptual)

The live product exposes at least:

- **A faster pacing shard** (primary **balance and design** reference).
- **A slower pacing shard** for players who want more time between actions—**same systems**, different cadence, **not** a second design track.

Design work should **default to the fast shard** unless a change is explicitly “Shard B only.”

---

## 4. Audience & session model

**Primary empathy target:** Players who enjoy **federations**, coordination, shared intel, political texture, and teaching newcomers.

**Also valid:** Lone operators who minimize social dependency—solo must retain a **meaningful progression path**.

**Rhythm:** Many **short sessions across a day**, with **moderate daily depth** summed up (often fragmented, not one giant sitting). **Mobile-browser friendliness** is a design goal: decisions and check-ins, not twitch APM.

---

## 5. Accounts & integrity

- **One account per real person** — no alt farms for scouts, abuse, or circular trading.
- **Email verification** may exist for messaging and account hygiene, but **gameplay systems must never hard-lock actions** purely on “unvalidated email.” Participation should not hinge on inbox state.
- **Inactive empires persist** — no mandated world purge when someone stops logging in.
- Moderation (**bans**, enforcement) and **lawful voluntary account closure** operate outside fantasy rules but constrain product policy.

---

## 6. Core player loop

1. **Grow and specialize colonies** — infrastructure, workers, extraction, planetary fit.
2. **Research technologies** shaping both **economy and war**.
3. **Build and maintain fleets** — ships are spatial **power projection** and **defense**.
4. **Engage politically and militarily** — attack, defend, negotiate, ally, betray—all with **lasting reputation**.

Early-session success markers (friendly “day one”) include **meaningful infrastructure**, **stretching outward to another objective**, **a few researches done** — **without** forcing PvP, missions, or joining an alliance **on day one**.

---

## 7. Social layer — federations first, but optional

- **Soft nudging** toward joining a federation (copy, light guidance) is desirable.
- **Membership itself remains optional.** Solo viability is a requirement.
- **Federation warfare** deliberately **changes** what engagements are permissible relative to informal brawls (stronger foes may become reachable when hostilities are systemic).
- Narrative lineage: move from punitive **domination / annex** fantasies toward a **referral-and-mentorship** frame—veterans **help rookies onboard**, reciprocal benefit, cooperative tone aligned with alliances.

---

## 8. The turn economy — intent

**Turns** are the backbone action currency—from economy upkeep to scouting to combat initiation.

Design intent:

- **Predictable scarcity** (“what do I do with this drip?”).
- **Room for pacing upgrades** later (including a contemplated **slow overflow reservoir** akin to stacking “energy”—supporting fragmented play without nuking shard identity).

Premium may expand **stored turn capacity** moderately; philosophy says that must **feel like pacing QoL**, not **dominance in combat**.

---

## 9. Economy — thematic model

Empires juggle abstract **credit**, population **food**, **materials**, **goods**, planetary **ore veins**, racial economic affinities, **infrastructure upkeep**, fleet **running costs**.

**Debt** is morally allowed to **hurt**:

- Spiraling negatives should **pressure** careless expansion.
- **Interest / debt snowball** reinforces consequence.

Recovery philosophy (product):

- Bankruptcy is **not** instantaneous at first breach—use a **grace window** where the player **liquidates hoards**, **trades openly**, seeks **friends or federation aid**.
- During insolvency-by-design-rules, empire **cannot start any military engagement** (no first strike, no counter-launch, no “open war” button) and **cannot commission new hulls**—but can still **trade**, **diplomate**, **research**, and **rebuild economy** so recovery is a **player story**, not a silent wipe.
- Exact grace **length** and **extra levers** remain open design space.

**Markets** are central to both **speculation** and **debt recovery** (turn stockpiles into solvency).

---

## 10. Combat & fairness doctrine

Design goals blend **cold-war clarity** with human drama:

- **Power disparity rules** constrain who can bully whom casually; alliance-level **war** temporarily **widens reach** (“we’re allowed to slug up”).
- A **firm newbie-protection power line** (**5 000**) is a **lasting rule** — not drifting with galaxy age—so rookies rarely enter the shark tank arbitrarily.
- **Repeated structural damage triggers protection** tuned to discourage chain-grief harassment while still allowing war.
- **Same-person / same-household** exploit pressure is both **ethical** (“one player”) and **mechanical** (“can’t fistfight yourself through alts”).
- **Debt-phase military abstinence** (§9) reinforces that **bankruptcy arcs are economic dramas**, not last-second fleets.

PvP realism: **being attacked** while broke may remain possible—that’s vulnerability; initiating while broke is forbidden.

---

## 11. Races — design intent

Players start as broadly **baseline humans (Terrans)** exploring the galaxy → later unlock asymmetric fantasies:

- **Raiders & extractors** (e.g. Marauder / Aspha-style identities),
- **Energy / shield specialists** (Guardian-style),
- **Assimilation & infection** lines (Collective / Viral-style),
- **Rare ancients** (Kal-Zul–style mystique),
- **Evolution / dark offshoots** (e.g. Dark Marauder threads).

Principles:

- **Different fail states** (some races “die” if they lose all worlds; others might fall only to fiscal collapse).
- **Different economic engines** (tax vs plunder vs mineral fortification, etc.).
- **Different ship rosters** so fleet identity is felt in both **build menu** and **battle fantasy**.

When phasing out harsh “enslavement” narration, rewrite **colonization / capture verbs** consistently for **those species** — future **mentor linkage** shouldn’t collide with lore still reading as **subjugation fetish**.

---

## 12. Ships & fleets — design intent

- **Ship archetypes & classes** (fighters, cruisers, starbases, specials) scaffold **readable rock-paper tensions**.
- **Building** costs credits, **minerals**, and **time/turn commitment**; fleets carry **running costs**, so doom-stacks punish idle wealth.
- **Research locks** throttle hull access so mid-game branching matters.
- **Combat** expresses **guns vs shields vs hull integrity**, with extra mechanics (return fire, flanking, capture / assimilation hooks) where species fantasy demands.
- **Premium-only hulls** remain **side-grade / convenience**, never **solo winner** gear.

Outstanding doc work at theory level:

- Formation / escort **player fantasy** spelled out cleanly for PvP guides.
- **Capture / assimilate / infect** social contracts—when are they heroic vs toxic?

---

## 13. Systems — light coverage

These exist to create **density**; theory treats them before implementation:

| Area | Theory role |
|------|----------------|
| **Exploration / expansion** | Discovery loop; must stay **accessible** sans email hostage-taking; planetary variety feeds colony fantasy. |
| **Research trees** | Long-horizon planning; synergy with infra and fleets. Race-flavored divergence. *(High tech count advertised — depth over breadth balance still negotiable.)* |
| **Player market** | Price discovery & opportunism; lifeline during debt. |
| **Projects** | Epic multi-step builds pacing mid/late eras; can modulate hardness of exploration arcs. |
| **Missions** | Optional scripted beats for flavor—not bar for onboarding success bar. |

---

## 14. Monetization — philosophical guardrails

**Never:** Sell **decisive combat supremacy**.

**Eligible directions:**

- **Cosmetics** & expression.
- **Time-savers** trimming friction—not cutting away mastery.
- **Playstyle pivots avoiding total account obliteration** (e.g., shift race identity **without deleting years of empire).
- Gentle **subscriber pacing convenience**—larger idle turn reservoir—must sync with fairness doctrine (**§10**).

All monetization hypotheses pass the test: **“Would a thoughtful free competitor still admire the match?”**

---

## 15. Mentorship / referral evolution

Future program outline:

| Pillar | Intent |
|---------|--------|
| **Recognition** | Weight **merit**—teaching streaks, mentee milestones, alliance contribution—not pyramid schemes. |
| **Referrer** | **Modest econ trickle**, **never** oligarch-tier advantage. |
| **Recruit** | **Marginal survivability fluff** — **not** a stat line that mocks combat doctrine. |
| **Anti-abuse** | Block **self-invites**, dormant cycling, churn fraud—design owes clarity here before launch rhetoric. |

This should **eventually replace or neuter** punitive **slave / annex narratives** incompatible with onboarding kindness.

---

## 16. UI / presentation stance

Nothing is canon yet — **all current screens are potentially temporary**. Experiment freely in modern themes **without** rewriting nostalgic classic presentation for veterans.

When convergence happens, revisit both this doc (**feel**) and **`GDD.md`** (**what shipped**).

---

## 17. How to use this document in practice

1. **Brainstorm freely** mechanics, arcs, arcs, econ shocks.
2. **Score each idea** quietly:
   - *Persistence respect?*
   - *Social fabric healthy?*
   - *Fair warfare & debt handling?*
   - *Race identity reinforced?*
   - *Solvent without pay coercion?*
3. Winners graduate into **`GDD.md`** when implementation nears—or stay here if still exploratory.

---

## 18. Open thematic questions *(not blocking — track over time)*

- Grace window **timing metaphor** — wall-clock vs turn vs debt-depth hybrid?
- Collective / Viral **empire endings** parity when **captures** rewritten?
- **NPC** aggression curve vs elder empires storyline?
- Emotional tonality shift speed from **grim dominion lore** toward **guided mentorship lore**?
